A popular crime documentary series has laid bare the chilling true story of a 19-year-old woman who was sexually assaulted and bludgeoned to death in her boyfriend’s home in a heinous murder that has gone unsolved for 16 years.

Brittany McGlone was brutally attacked as she slept at the house in Winnsboro, Texas, in 2007.

It was not until 15 years later that the young woman’s family thought progress had finally been made in the case after a man named Chad Carr was charged with her murder.

But a grand jury ultimately ruled there was not enough evidence to indict him and Carr walked free – much to the dismay of Brittany’s family.

Here, FEMAIL has laid bare the disturbing realities as the latest episode of People Magazine Investigates explores the unsolved case.

The horrific true story began on May 4, 2007, after Brittany returned home from her night shift at the Lowe’s Distribution Center in Mount Vernon.

She had taken a year off after graduating high school and was working two jobs in order to save money to study nursing at college.

The teen drove straight back to boyfriend Jeff Stogner’s house to sleep following her shift and is thought to have arrived sometime after 7am.

Jeff and his family – who also lived at the address – told authorities they were not home at the time and were instead giving someone a lift to the airport.

But when Brittany’s boyfriend did return he was met with a harrowing discovery.

He found the 19-year-old’s lifeless body in his room and dialed 911.

Brittany had been sexually assaulted and bludgeoned with an unknown object some time between 8am and 3pm, according to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.

An affidavit seen by KWTX later revealed that the victim’s undergarments were missing from the crime scene and an autopsy stated the cause of death was massive head trauma.

In the aftermath of Brittany’s death, detectives questioned multiple people connected to the case – including Jeff and his family – but no suspects were publicly named.

The cold case featured on Dateline in 2021 in an episode that saw Brittany’s half-sister Hope McGlone reveal that the had family had many theories about the killer’s identity.

Among them was a man known by the Stogner family who was questioned early on in the investigation.

According to Wood County records, the suspect also had a criminal history with prior charges for burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On September 1, 2022, the Sheriff’s Office posted a Facebook update about Brittany’s case – 15 years after her death.

It stated that a man named Chad Carr had been arrested for capital murder in relation to Brittany’s death and was being held on $1 million bond.

Authorities wrote that they ‘worked diligently… to help bring closure to the family of Brittany McGlone.’

The aforementioned affidavit stated that the evidence against him included a statement from Carr’s girlfriend that he had been furious that the victim had stayed at the Stogner house overnight – despite the fact he was never allowed to do so.

That, along with holes in Carr’s alibi and a failed polygraph test, were listed as probable cause for his arrest, according to the report.

But the progress in the case was short-lived and a grand jury found that there was not enough evidence to indict him for the murder, according to NBC affiliate KETK.

He was released from the Wood County Jail on November 30, 2022, much to the dismay of Brittany’s family.

Hope discussed Carr’s arrest and subsequent release with the network at the time, stating: ‘I’m kind of speechless when it comes to that because I never thought we would see that day.

‘And then to have this happen was kind of like another whirlwind.’

She also told CBS 19: ‘Honestly, frustrated is not even the right word. I’m enraged.’

No other suspects have been named in the investigation.

On the anniversary of her death earlier this year, a post read: ‘This is one of the hardest anniversaries. The first day of May I was hit with waves of anxiety. This year marks 16 years since you were taken from us…

‘This is also a year where you have been wronged WAY more than I thought you were could be. I never thought it could get worse than it already was, but I have been proved wrong.

‘What is about you that the people that are supposed to bring you justice, don’t believe you deserve that? What is that makes these people so heartless?’

It continued: ‘I don’t know what else we can do. The more time goes by, the more wrongs that are done, leave me with a sense of emptiness and feelings of being powerless…

‘You are loved, remembered, and cherished by the people you knew you. And to the people responsible for taking your life and stifling any chance at justice, your day will come.

‘To the Wood County District Attorney’s Office, you should ALL be utterly ashamed and do not deserve the titles you hold. You’re supposed to be a champion for victims, yet you’re almost equally responsible for what has happened to Brittany.’
